The biggest thing people get wrong about mattress disposal in Tarrant County is assuming Republic Services or Waste Connections will take a mattress on the regular curbside route. They almost never do. Most municipal contracts in DFW classify mattresses as a "bulky item" that requires a special pickup, and many cities limit bulky pickups to once a quarter or once a year. If you missed your annual pickup week, you are stuck driving to a transfer station, paying a tip fee, hoping you can lift it into your truck bed by yourself, and getting your truck back home before the mattress wraps around itself in the wind. For bed bug infested or biohazard mattresses (post hospice cases, dorm move outs, rental cleanouts), we wrap the mattress in contractor grade plastic before we carry it through the house. This is the responsible way to do it. Texas Department of Health guidance is to encase infested mattresses before moving them so the infestation does not spread to other rooms or vehicles. We charge a small extra fee for the wrap, which we mention upfront.
